simplified answer is continuation and inhabiting vast geographic distances just like our animals dogs, cows, cats, sheep, etc (who all are much more varied than humans and also same subspecies).
and btw this is biology, not math. things here aren't as straightforward and simple

your picture literally proves you wrong. there is continuation between these groups unlike giraffes that are completely separated.
if the study tested more groups of people (more specifically chadic and the ones between subsaharan africa and north africa) this continuation would be even more prominent.
and like i said there are several factors that go into deciding taxonomic ranks, some species are more genetically diverse than others. for subspecies one of the most important factors is the ability to interbreed without fitness penalty.
