As of our current knowledge of physics etc.
Is free will possible?

Is everything predetermined from the beginning of the universe by physical laws?
Quantum mechanics - as far as i know, it wouldn't prove free will because it's chaotic.

What would you recommend for a potential physics major who knows calc and wants to start teaching himself before classes start?

Any good chem, materials science or lasers books are also appreciated.

I'm actually glad. The idea is a little upsetting.
It just sounds so counterintuitive that it's difficult to take it seriously without some incredible evidence.

Is it possible that we'll find a way to explain consciousness but not the qualia?

Premise: my understanding of physics is rather poor.

My question is: is quantum mechanic stochastic or does it only appear to be so?

I cannot conceive a completely deterministic universe because I can't imagine how such thing would get started (I don't know if the concept makes sense to you.).

Does free will exist?

If no, does this depress you at all?

Does consciousness exist?

Is the universe completely deterministic?

How do you, as a rational person, view death? Does it depress you at all?

I was just watching cable tv and saw about 4 commercials on Coal being clean burning and efficient energy. Now, I knew this would be an inevitable step after oil prices either got too high or were running low. However, is this really better for the environment? how long will this energy last? When do you think people will wise up to nuclear power after the ordeal with fukushima?
