I have an issue /sci/

At my workplace I've been working on a product validation method for the last 6 months.
I've developed a relatively fast and cheap way to calculate a metric that directly correlates the the output efficiency of the product
In all of my literature studies I haven't found any evidence of this being done before.

So how do I capitalize on my work without some dickbag outside (or inside) my company stealing my thunder?
My company probably wont want me to publish this for fear of competitors taking it
Should I try to patent this? Or is there another way I can keep the credit for my own work?
