gonna x-ray some rocks to see what's in them soon.
and then we're gonna melt them down to see what's in them, just to be sure.

Earth has similar bulk composition to asteroids in our system (though relatively siderophile-enriched and lithophile-depleted due to the circumstances of the Moon's creation).

what terrestrial planets have that asteroids don't is planetary differentiation; since molten iron and molten silica are immiscible, the iron sinks to the center (taking with it all the heavy metals that dissolve readily in it) and leaving the silica (and stuff that dissolves in it) at the surface. if you were to crack a terrestrial planet open, you'd find the desirable siderophile elements already somewhat concentrated in the core, making them easier to process.

not much of a market for fossil prep outside of museums, and that's a very small job market. there's some demand for private collection, but that's not really science-y and I don't think there are that many openings.
if you want to make money off of paleo, you can try micropaleontology, using pollen or diatoms or graptolites etc. to do biostratigraphy. the petroleum industry is realizing that seismic data is only as good as the interpreter and that biostrat is a useful tool in correlating between wells, so they're hiring new professionals to replace the old guard. (there's a big age gap in the industry at the moment; there are old paleontologists near retirement, and there are some young guns, but there are relatively few mid-career paleontologists at oil companies right now.)

natural hazards management (keeping people safe from things like floods and landslides and avalanches)
structural geological mapping, sequence stratigraphy, seismic interpretation, and micropaleontology are all valuable to petroleum extraction
structural geo and geochemistry are important for ore mining
groundwater hydrology is super important in arid regions too

>So why so few geologists? I'm truly baffled.
a big part of it is that earth science isn't taught in elementary/middle school, and hardly taught in most high schools. people learn basic biology, chemistry, and physics, but they don't get geology until college.
some people are trying to change that. one of the professors at my uni is doing a lot of education outreach, helping teach public school science teachers how to introduce geology in their classes.

chert is a form of microcrystalline quartz.
it's crystallographically different from other forms of silica, such as cristobalite or tridymite or stishovite or silica glass, but it's physically different from macrocrystalline quartz which makes those beautiful six-sided (but symmetrically trifold) crystals we know and love.
it's like the difference between calcite and micrite, which are themselves crystallographically different from aragonite.

I'll happily respond to those claims when you source them. FireFoxG says that he's using the IPCC's own predictions; can you point to where the IPCC said any of that?
additionally, he does a little handwaving and comes up with a climate sensitivity parameter of 0.52, when this is significantly lower than estimates with actual research backing this up. (the usual range reported is 1.5-4.5)
any particular reason he handwaved a value and completely ignored the actual research on the topic?

>Why are climate scientists making it so hard to take them seriously with all their shady graph and statistic manipulation?
I can only assume you refer to the adjustment of instrumental data to account for bias/error in the measurements, which deniers breathlessly declare is TOTALLY FRAUD, GUYS.

>Why resort to meme claims like "97% of scientists agree"?
because the lay public doesn't have the background (or, frequently, the intelligence) to understand the technical basis.
and it's not "97% of scientists agree"; it's "97% of studies agree". one is popularity, and the other is the concordance of evidence.

I'm a paleontologist
>oh, you study dinosaurs?
no, I'm going into invertebrate paleo, so right now I study trilobites
>what's a trilobite?
well, they were ancient sea bugs that looked a little bit like a horseshoe crab
>what's a horseshoe crab?
never mind, the important thing is that I dick around with rocks looking for seashells
>oh. are you going into the oil business to make lots of money?
nah, I'm going into academia to make just enough money to eat at Chipotle once in a while. you're thinking of conodont specialists.
>what's a conodont?
basically just a worm with teeth
>oh...
>have you found any dinosaur bones?
...yes, yes I have
