Honestly it has to be nuclear, but trying to convince the public that it is safe while also competing with oil and natural gas seems almost unachievable.

Ok /sci/ i have a question for you
Lets say nuclear war erupts, and i happen to have a fallout shelter and be completely prepared for this event. I am about 100 kilometres away from the nearest major city, and its been 90 days since the city was destroyed by a nuke. I want to venture out of my shelter into the wasteland to survey the damage. Assuming my land got a full blast of fallout, how radioactive would the environment be? Can i eat animals damaged by radiation? What equipment would i need to make sure i don't die of radiation sickness? How do i read this equipment?

Not straightforward enough for my unscientific mind.
