Are you american? As far as I know only US unis do this. My uni (and I believe most European unis) just have your grade be whatever you got on the exam. Sometimes homework is obligatory, but does not affect your grade except you'll fail the course if you fail the homework. Most of the time the homework is optional though.

Also, what's up with all the retards in this thread hating on OP? Sounds like you guys got Stockholm syndrome. Your grade in a course should be based on the final exam and nothing else. I've even heard horror stories where attendance is part of your grade, which sounds ridiculous. It's not a kindergarden.
