A magnet works by an induced coherent field geometry of the dielectric field which makes centrifugal divergent and centripetal convergent "pressure zones"(the flux) . What makes it "coherent" is that the subatomic makeup of the magnet are all in unison doing the same thing in the same fashion (aka all the iron atoms are "polarized"). That is why a magnet has a "field" and a chunk of the exact same material nonmagnetized does not. Light is an electromagnetic phenomena, the magnet bends both the light and the ferrous material (Faraday effect).
