What is the future of nuclear energy technology and will it ever experience a 'boom' period of rapid growth?

I've been arguing with a friend of mine about nuclear power. I've been saying how most of the waste produced can be taken care of, and we're only left with a small amount of long lasting radioisotopes. Also that it's a better alternative to dump CO2 into the atmosphere. My friend on the other hand thinks it's bad because radiation is bad and some radioisotopes last for thousands of years. He thinks the solution is in solar and other "green" tech. I'd like to hear other's thoughts on nuclear power.

Can anyone recommend some selected reading materials on nuclear power and/or power plants in general. Working on a degree in nuclear systems and wanted to keep my mind sharp over the break. Thanks.

Looking for some good resources on designing nuclear reactors and anything related to the sort. I'd prefer for it to be free as finding textbooks is easy, but I'd rather not pay since I'm broke currently.
Also, any nuclear engineers here? I'm an MEfag myself, third year, and I've grown really interested in the energy business especially nuclear energy. Any advice or stories related to the energy business would welcomed as well.

Sooo....

is Nuclear Power really the way to go?

>clean
>renewable
>cheap

Imagine something as big as a soda can powering an entire city

Is such a thing possible?
