We don't need anyone's permission to do it, we don't need to go through ten fucking committees, we don't need to write a grant proposal, we don't need to beg the government for gibs at all, we don't need to fill out HASEPs, we don't need to find the right mix of diversity hires to put on the paper, we don't need to do 10 dense pages of x-ray diffraction and density functional calculations, and we don't have a reputation to risk.

Just make it, see if it floats, play with it if it actually does. No resistivity measurements even required in that case. Just videos that would be hard to fake.
