We welcome you. Time travel is possible but it has to be inconsequential to the timeline. Spacetime can bend over on itself or make paths in the shape of loops according to some. It is not "straight" as your question implies.

Time travel to the past might be possible but:
1)if there is an unknown probability you will just disapear. Because you cannot travel to a known time in the past and intervene in it, so if you would intervene you just 'disapear' or die or is anihilated.
2)if there is an unkown propabiblity that you will be thrown into a time or even place you cannot possibily know what the actual events were and so anything you do is already part of the past

I saw this question on a extremely high IQ test once. It didnt mention this possibilities you do. Just that its first contact and you have to explain the aliens what an orange is.
You would have to think of these possibilities as it would show you have powerful nonlinear analysis abilities.
It also didnt limit the material ways you could contact the aliens, so it was different from your question in that way too.

As the 3rd possibility is the most hard and intriguing I would dabble at it:
1) Make different gestures, maybe three: jump, extend your arms to the sides, crouch.
2) Keep doing it until the alien tries to copy, no mater how different his anatomy is.
3) Change the sequence of the gestures and expect the alien to also change it:

Later you can associate different gestures with repetitions of the other gestures. Then associate yet another gesture with somation of the repetition gestures. After that you do basic arithmetic signs.
I don't know were exactly to go over there: continue integers or expand to real numbers.
I don't know exactly how to connect this to biology or other subjects but it is possible. Like a gesture to signify water and then get some water.
Later some form of record exchange would be nice, either computer sounds, writing or sculptures, depending on the aliens sensory means

When the robot starts arguing with you it is concious and it should be respected for being alive and cooperative, well, then it is self-concious.
Of course we are already assuming it can learn everything a human can and do everything a human could, except the obvious like bleed and cry.

I recently salvaged a couple of dozen firedamaged desktop computers which need to be stress-tested. So I'm having the summerbrats play games on them during the day.
