> it was absolute number one for all basic standard of living indicators.
Even if this was true, it doesn't matter at all. A materialist worldview that cannot provide material fulfilment beyond basic survival will never ever succeed and communism was not consumerist, therefore it was doomed.
Russians are very smart and capable people which is why the model worked at all, but you can see that their success was based on intellectual keystones like Korolev and Kalashnikov with a much lower overall level of expertise. If a Tsar had come along with any idea of how to industrialize the country Russia would be ten times better off than it is today.
The "muh world wouldn't play fair" argument is a shitty cope too. I'm from an ex-Yu country, with no significant pressures on the economy or military until the very last days, and the economy still declined and the country still fell apart due to VERY REAL FLAWS in socialist economic and social organization that simply disincentivize talent across the board.
When you inject party politics into everything and equalize skilled and unskilled income, the people become entitled and the experts are demoralized, so every aspect of society freezes up with distrust and spite and the country rots. Only a fucking retard could imagine that worker self-rule would produce anything but a bunch of corruption and ignorant dipshits splitting into cliques. (Cuba is not a valid counterexample because wartime siege footing instills unity, but even there the bureaucrats are wealthier than any experts, you can meet them on the resort beaches sometimes and it's just like in exYu or USSR.)
China has fixed those mistakes with nationalism and a return to old imperial philosophy and metaphysics, the only fix for the flaws of socialism, and I eagerly wait to see the end results of that.
