Life is naught more than chemicals performing out their reactions. Our sentience, emotions, actions and illusion of free will are just simple by-products of this reaction. But you cannot create something from nothing, it goes against all laws of thermo dynamics and physics as we know it.
I therefore give it to you that there is a perpetual recycling of ‘life’ i.e. our emotions, actions, free will…. That although seem immeasurable and unquantifiable now are able to be quantified and classified we have just not found the means to measure them as of yet or harness them.
Remember we were unaware of waveforms and radiation for thousands of years, we saw what they did but never what they were. All we had was the end result, just like emotions and life.

What happens if you're LIDAR-scanning a room full of mirrors?

The Mars Climate Orbiter was intended to enter orbit at an altitude of 140.5–150 km (460,000-500,000 ft.) above Mars. However, a navigation error caused the spacecraft to reach as low as 57 km (190,000 ft.). The spacecraft was destroyed by atmospheric stresses and friction at this low altitude.

The navigation error arose because Lockheed Martin, the contractors for the craft's thrusters, did not use SI units to express their performance!
