Both a 'sun' made of water ice and a 'sun' made of silica-based lava are both impossible objects. They'd collapse down into non-ice and non-lava fusing suns as soon as they attained the requisite masses.

The only differences would be that there solar starting conditions would be unique in the universe. Take the "ice sun". It would start fusing with a mix of 18% Hydrogen and 82% Oxygen by mass. The star would probably have a short lifespan, since any star with that little H and that much O is near the end of its fusing life.

And the "lava sun" would be even more messed up, since it would have very little H and a lot of Carbon, Silicon, Oxygen, Calcium and so on.

At any rate, it's inaccurate to claim they'll just collapse down into compressed masses without fusing. Totally false claim. The pressures and temperatures in the cores of these collapsing masses MUST cross into the fusion range.
