I'm following some online classes from coursera and I'm wondering :

Are college classes just a shitty excuse to advertise books written by the professor ?

In some of the lessons the teacher accept the fact that some part of the material will not be covered because it's in his book.

Is that a normal thing in America ? You already pay a shitload of money for college and they still ask for more money after ?
