Why is Transhumanism in mainstream media almost always treated as a disaster waiting to happen?

Is it just fear? Are people actually afraid we'll look like the fucking BORG or some other such abomination? Has no one ever even considered how, in a market-driven global economy and in a society obsessed with image and ergonomics, we'll eventually have these advances so streamlined that post-humans will actually look better than we do now? Can no one conceive of how future genetic and cybernetic augmentation will probably be so seamlessly infused with the human form that they'll barely even be noticeable and probably look more like magic?

See we are always getting these grandiose dystopian scenarios of "us" versus "them" - unaltered humans versus cyborgs, machines, genetic Übermensch, etc. not realizing that in reality, the divisions would be far more ambiguous. The various subcultures alone that would manifest in lieu of certain advances would change the game entirely. I'm not suggesting we'll all want to be cyber hipsters, the point is that this process will likely happen so gradually and become such an integral and practical part of our lives that we will in time look upon such advances the way we currently look upon the purchase of a cell phone. It will JUST MAKE SENSE.
