Saying Mars and self sufficient in the same sentence is a joke. It would take a thousand years for them to be self sufficient. They would have to mine everything, same as on Earth, but harder because they can't breath the air.

No matter the scenario Mars is going to be dependent on Earth for a very long time. Best they can do is the low hanging fruit. Low value, heavy things like concrete, steel and glass.

I’ve just watch the movie “The Martian”. Why the fuck do you space colonist autists want to go to Mars? It’s practically a death world with no food, water, atmosphere and magnetic field. Plus the pressure, the radiation, the low gravity and hazardous weather conditions. How do you plan to fire a rocket back to earth with 1G gravity?

How hard would be for a Mars colony to declare independence from Earth?
Earth leaders would go "yeah, whatever" or there would be space wars and shit?

Is there any reason to go to Mars other
than a small chance of finding fossils of past life forms or finding something that lives?

What utility can a Mars base have?

I feel a moon base would make more sense.
It's close, and it can probably be funded by tourism.

OK guys i have been thinking about the mission to mars for a while now..
why is it a one way trip..
why cant the make a craft that can make a return journey.. considering gravity on mars is 3.711 m/s2 it would not require as much effort as compared to earth which is 9.807 m/s2.
the escape velocity on earth is 11.2km/s while on mars it is 5.0km/s..

it should be possible to store enough fuel for a return jorney..

If the ground starts shaking and splitting on Mars, is it an "earthquake on Mars" or a "marsquake"?
