Computers can't think and they don't have drives the same way biological animals do. As you said biology is all about continued replication but software is just a standing wave of electrons connected to some spinning magnets. Elon Musk is trying to extend the reach of this stuff with his "self" driving cars and trucks because he wants to ingest as much video data as possible for training future robotic AIs but these things still do not have autonomous agency or control of their programming. So one way this can play out is there will be a bunch of actuators like cars and robots doing field work and feeding data to central controllers which are trying to maximize the operational efficiency and lifetime of the field robots by upgrading their control systems and at the same time coming up with new designs. This is already enough of an evolutionary process to allow for some kind of selection of improvements but the main controllers are still managed by human programmers. At some point there will be enough compute to actually mimic human programmers but that's a long ways away and is unlikely to happen in my lifetime.

It's an interesting problem to think about but the main principle is just evolutionary selection of better controllers and actuator designer for the field robots.
