But what evidence inspires the hypothesis? I can't think of anything that would more likely imply consciousness travels to the brain rather than is generated there.

It just seems like one of those late-night "what if?"'s that teases the mind with the semi-plausible fantastic in spite of the apparent and expected. That border of fact and faith the human thinking process is so fond of.
