Climate change hyperbole and the acceptance of post-normal science by the mainstream scientific community (i.e. subordinating science to political goals) destroyed scientific credibility in the mainstream.

The unwillingness of the scientific community to lead on and defend the application of science to human hereditary (eugenics), nuclear power, and expansion rather than retreat of space exploration, and instead act as a meek weathervane for whatever liberal opinion of the day is, amounted to a self-abdication of science as the leading policy maker of society. Climate change hyperbole then killed off the residual role of science's social standing.
