[spoiler]<div class="math">\fbox{Has anyone here read "The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect?" Do you think a universe like the one that happened after the 'Change' would be so bad? I realize that there are not many luddites on here, but do you think there are some technological advancements, ones that 'help' humanity, that shouldn't be used?

Here's the story in case you want to read it: http://localroger.com/prime-intellect/mopiidx.html}</div></spoiler>

I read this fantastic science-fiction story, would like /sci/'s thoughts on it.

Discrete systems can emulate analog, continuous systems. The opposite is not true.

>Instead of telling the machine to go straight to a task, tell the machine to think for itself.

Oh, here we go again. Because consciousness is the great ineffable flame and not a series of logical processes?

>But even then, when the goal has been reached, Is the machine truly thinking for itself or is it simply exhibiting the behavior that we have instilled in it?

Cars don't move. They just copy motion.

As a sidenote, I haven't written much lately because my PSU has been behaving like a retard, but I think it's pretty cool. It involves mind uploading, interstellar travel, realistic depictions of nanotechnology, relativistic warfare, and them main character is both a parahuman and a posthuman because I didn't like how in all of science fiction all posthumans were either uploads or AI's. No love for furries?

It's essentially a trolling novel.

ITT:

>It's just a copy

Sorry if I sound a lot like His Metamajesty Ray Kurzweil, but he's right on that account: There is only continuity in the 'pattern' in your head.

As a sidenote I just finished reading The Singularity is Near. I expected it to be as crazy religious-esque as everybody said, but it was, eh, just a pretty cool story. It's a good collection of sources though, if a touch outdated.
