What's with all these new "drastically improve your memory" guides that are being sold? Is there really something to all that stuff?

I know that what a dude spoke of @ TED made a lot of sense to me, but I couldn't personally confirm or deny its accuracy because I'm not a scientist and haven't experienced it myself.
The TED guy spoke of leaving impressions and how it's crucial for remembering things. He talked about how you could go about leaving impressions on small everyday things in life, things most of us would never be able to remember if we hadn't practiced these techniques and as a result learned how to remember them.

Guess I'm a bit excited now, too... Should I be? I'm young and if you really can train your memory to the extent that you are able to remember every single thing you read, etc, then I figure my opportunities "endless" if I were to teach myself these techniques.

Any Chemical engineers on /sci/ right now?
if so i'm a grade 11 high school student and im quite concerned about my future. I want to be a chemical engineer but my first two years of high school i lived in the US...but now i have moved and im living in canada but there is a massive problem that im encountering. My math skill are way behind. My parents cant afford a tutor and i go to to a school with very limited teaching capabilities. meaning its a huge school and the teachers dont give a shit if you get the material or not. In all respects i dont think i will be able to make it. i need advice. Like alternative jobs to chemical engineering or maybe just tell me what subjects i really need to get a B.Eng....or even if high school math and sciences mean anything at all.

Thats a mighty strong laser, son.

Anyone uneasy about the LHC and its apparent world destroying capabilities? Just tell me how you think it will happen, and I will tell you why it won't.

If you get anything with mass moving fast enough you can destroy planets.
