not true entirely. another facet of this is that two generations ago, businesses could set their own criteria on who they would hire, pay to invest in that person's education/training, and have a worker for life. now, no matter what criteria you have, if it doesn't have enough of whatever professional grievance group wants some money you are open to a discrimination lawsuit. employers can no longer just pick whoever they want without huge risk of losing money and bad publicity.

so employers just started requiring degrees for pretty much everything to insulate themselves from this. this worked with loose lending practices to massively inflate the costs of college for everyone.

this is going to be a HELL of a bubble when it pops.

we don't have a workforce trained to do that. we aren't even moving in a direction to have a workforce trained to do that. the diploma mill churning out useless hobby degrees is going full steam ahead, and will continue to do so until the education bubble pops- hard.

i don't doubt that more economic productivity is starting to be done in R&D type shit, but that is not the same as transitioning the entire economy to that base.
