Anyone ever hear of these sleep schedules which claim you can function at full capacity with as little as two hours of sleep every day, by replacing nightly sleep with power naps? The theory behind it is that since REM sleep is the most useful phase, and since we only spend 2 hours per night in REM, the other 6 hours are useless and can be discarded. Most effects of sleep deprivation are due to a lack of REM sleep, so in theory, taking short naps throughout the day should still satisfy your need for sleep, while also freeing up an extra 6 hours of maximum productivity per day.
The most popular of these is the Uberman, which replaces the 8 hour block of sleep with six 20 minute power naps spaced 4 hours apart. However, there are other variations, such as the Dymaxion (4 x 30), the Everyman (transition into Uberman by gradually phasing in power naps to replace monophasic sleep), and the Siesta (basically just taking an afternoon nap).
Aside from a few brave souls, this strategy is actually employed in extreme situations, such as military or solo sea travel, as it is simply impractical to helpessly lie down for 8 hours at a time.
What does /sci/ think of polyphasic sleep? Is it scientifically valid, or is it just a shitty theory that flopped but somehow is still around?

>he isn't on a sleep cycle
literally why?

I'm on uberman. 6 equally spaced 20 minute naps throughout the day.

My mind feels sharper.
