It's a hugely inefficient use of NASA funds but at the end of the day the US needs a "flagship" rocket or we'll be stuck where we've been for the past 5 years forever
The US can't rely solely on commercial either, considering that they have a peculiar tendency to explode. I also laugh when SpaceXplosion shills try to claim that SLS will be a waste of money when MCT "exists"
MCT, if it ever flies, will probably be 10 years behind schedule considering that Falcon heavy is already 4 years behind schedule and is just 3 already flying rockets strapped together
