You can be kind of slow but well trained and moderately capable and find a job in industry; there's literally millions of openings. To make it in pure math, you have to be one of the top fifty or so people on the PLANET in your particular field; you're basically trying to make it to the olympics, but nobody tries to argue that genetic limitations can't keep people out of the Olympics, and everyone agrees that spending your youth training for professional sports when you're clearly not exceptionally talented is delusional. The same solemn, honest advice should be given to people who bite off more than they can chew academically.
