In order to code proficiently in java, you need to learn how to code like an idiot and unlearn any sort intelligence you may have going in. See if they will lets you take an equivalent programming 101 course in the EE or CompE departments which uses C++ & C instead. You'll learn far more and will actually enjoy it.
