I'm not sure what you're trying to communicate here. Historical context is pretty important, I don't see how you can handwave it away as "literally nothing has changed"

As to your point about Democracy; it's a system of governance. Within a Democratic system, the people (demos) can elect to give themselves less freedoms. So it's not so black & white that we can assert ""more Democracy = more freedom"".
In Ancient Athens they had Direct Democracy.
In our times the governance systems are marketed to us as Democratic, but consider this:

* Does one name on a ballot really represent most of your complex viewpoints for an entire electoral cycle? (a few years)
* Does your elected Representative actually stand up the majority collective views of the citizens they're supposed to represent, or do they beckon to private interests first, and public interests second?

I disagree that the current systems can be honestly called purely Democratic while keeping a straight face. The people do not have much legislative power and they are not really represented. Still, it's the least bad option right now for large nations and states
