Why the hell would anyone want to go to Mars?

There's really nothing there. Sure it's relatively close and its surface isn't made of lava, but that's about all its got going for it.

It has a thin atmosphere made of carbon dioxide. With a high of no more than 50 degrees F in the day. It has low gravity and no magnetic field to deflect radiation, so if we were to land an astronaut on there, he'd probably die of radiation poisoning. Plus it would take no less than 2 years round trip to get there and back.

Why is it not enough to just look at it thorough a telescope and send a rover there once in a while?
