A Calabi Yau manifold doesn't have to be in the 11th dimension, it can be in 10 or 9 or 8 or whatever. The reason it's in 11 dimensions is because -- depending on which theoretical physicist you ask-- 11 dimensions is where all of the forces are fundamentally united.. Hence why the ''manifold is everything, the manifold is nothing''.. Because the 11th dimension would have to be everywhere yet so small it doesn't react with our dimension very much (or you would see shit magically pop in and out of the 3rd dimension which is not what happens)
