So my interested was piqued recently by the idea of web crawlers. I've done some research, and read a dissertation published in 2000 by the creator of webcrawler.com, which is now a bit outdated.

I am looking for some modern dissertations or examples of crawlers I should read, preferentially something not too laden with jargon. I'm not a CS major, but a biochemist with some interests outside the field.

Also, I definitely know that Python is an easier language and NOT efficient in comparison...but is it efficient enough to start out with?

I'm contemplating asking my boss (who owns a local restaurant) for access to all his data since he opened, including sales, profits, order information, unique customer counts, etc. I'd like to create a part time position for myself in which I comb over the data and find ways to make the business more efficient.

I've been trying to think of what I could look at, and I came up with a few ideas like testing which menu items sell significantly more/less than others (assuming they should all sell approximately the same), which promotion methods have a significant increase on customer business over their run time, etc. I was even considering comparing what items return customers are more likely to buy (based on stored credit card numbers), and creating a predictive model for how much food to order for certain days (based on combined sales info for past decade).

I was wondering if these ideas seem statistically sound, and if you think I'd be likely to have any sort of success - and what else I could look at, of course. I know I'm missing some important methods.
