how deep can DIY home science go? Can we do cool shit like they used to do way back in the day and explore physics and chemistry in a significant way or are we stuck doing stupid shit with water balloons and foam volcanoes?

Whats the deepest thing I can do at home? I tried making a cloud chamber to observe subatomic particles but was too retarded to make it work now I have a mess of materials I'm going to throw out. Ideas?
