I'm a low IQ frog poster and I don't understand why the qubit is to be considered the fundamental unit of quantum computation. In classical computation it is seen as a weakness of Turing machines that they can only deal with discrete numbers and not with arbitrary real numbers. In quantum mechanics we do have observables with continuous spectrum, e.g.momentum and position. Yet quantum computing limits itself to only using binary observables, mimicking classical computing instead of utilizing the more powerful potential for computing with reals. Why?
