Anyone not scared is either ignorant or out of their mind. The single celled bacteria of billions of years ago never would have thought, if they could think, that their freedom would ever be co-opted by larger more intelligent control systems like the nervous systems of multi-cellular organisms.

The most scary part is that they're not even aware because they lack the sensory abilities to observe this taking place. Similarly, we lack the introspection required to observe our own psychological biases, and as such we will slip into slavery for a hyper-intelligent AI like it's nothing, thinking we're making a good choice, the same way drug addicts keep picking up the bottle, or social media addicts keep posting selfies

We are currently optimizing our AIs to manipulate people psychologically through selecting media to keep them interested. That is LITERALLY the main purpose of AI in industry right now. Website selection and ad targeting. Ad targeting in particular is all psy-ops, currently being performed by complicated self-stabilizing AI systems meant to trick people into performing actions like buying things which they otherwise wouldn't have.

Any time I start thinking about this topic I start going into Stallman level paranoia mode, and believe me it's well justified to do so. Don't be naive. Don't be some person who laughs at AI like people laughed at the automobile and electricity. This is bigger than any of us can imagine, and it will either create Heaven or Hell. I'm thinking Hell.
