Could scientists who refuse to support or at least remain silent about 'popular public belief' be somewhat to blame?

I need your pedagogic and scientific advices dear /sci/entists.

well, I have a (almost) 10 years old niece, her mother (my sister) is very catholic and probably also creationist, she goes in a catholic (nuns) school, so I think she usually doesn't receive a scientific mindset.
She's intelligent and kinda interested in astronomy and biology, she knows about evolution and often speculate about how aliens could be and where they live, but btw I fear that the environment plus all that retarded tv shows she watch (like hypnotized) everyday could make her lose her potential.

Since she likes to read, what books you suggest me for her?
I was thinking about Stephen & Lucy Hawking books, something else?

we are from Italy, living in Sicily.

If our society put a proper premium on having a broadly educated citizenry with good foundations in mathematics and science we'd all be substantially better off for it.

The reason people don't need to be educated is because people simply aren't sufficiently educated for us to have taken advantage of the education they never got. It's a self-perpetuating deficiency.

Social 'Sciences' have basically two important differences that are preventing them from being as useful as one should hope they would be:

1) There is a dichotomy between descriptiveness and normativity in social sciences, whereas physical sciences are entirely descriptive. They also seem to have made little or no progress in figuring out which side of the fence to be on.

2) Social Sciences are methodologically degenerative (to use Imre Lakatos' notion). They basically need to be scrapped and rebuilt or undergo major revolutions.
