Because STEM careers are far more enjoyable. I've worked as a welder before and it's shit. Braindead work but nothing is more unpleasant than inhaling all sorts of toxic shit because the boss needs you to weld in an awkward position in a confined space. I think sitting at a desk in a nice AC'd room solving interesting problems is far more fulfilling than staring at a molten puddle all fucking day.

Also, engineers and software devs make more than tradies, as do a lot of jobs that require a math degree (I don't think an electrician makes more than an actuary)
