I'd want the machines to be able to assemble themselves into things like buildings, mirrors and solar panels after they've collected the needed mass of carbon.

Trees and other plants are not the best ways of sequestering carbon, the plants and their waste matter eventually decompose and go back into the atmosphere anyway
