Ye, I'm a scientific diver and get technical training from padi. This is technically private, but I'm getting it alongside an archeological education (which requires field experience). If I hadn't found this opportunity though, I think I would've still pursued my dive master, gotten a job seasonally alternating between dive tour guide and fly fishing guide, welding on contract when I need the money. Apprentiships are super hard homie, with a big age cut off. Most likely out of highschool he'd have to work 10hrs 14ish dollars an hour for a while before he got accepted into an apprenticeship. Once he's in, it'd be a good track but you're still working longer/hard hours for 18ish dollars per. The money doesn't get good until you master after a few years and get some bs cert that let's you sit on your ass for big money (ie crane operators). So you're advice is disgustingly true, in that there's no real point if you can't get a specialized niche. I guess if you never get a cool cert, you can always live under a bridge and be a troll making people pay you tolls...
