That's why we need AI research. To control the AI and make sure that it preserves the one thing that may make us unique among the animal kingdom; consciousness.
I'm not an athiest, and I don't think you need consciousness to be an intelligent entity. Consciousness may come from somewhere beyond the physical, but our meat brains that just compute logic are emulatable. AGI wouldn't be conscious or have a 'mind', it would just be a super-efficient pattern matching machine with a sophisticated internal model of reality and the ability to modify itself.
My point is, we work on it now, we might get a good result. We ignore it or try to ban AI research, it'll only delay the inevitable and we won't be prepared.

But yeah, what this guy >>12310963 said

Reddit:
>posts tied to a username = posting history
>upvotes = karma
>thread sorted by popularity/agreement
>subreddit sorted by popularity/agreement

4chan:
>posts not tied to any username = no posting history
>replies = interaction
>thread sorted by /old/ so new threads are attractive to post in
>board sorted by activity/controversy/popularity

the mindset that goes into creating a reddit comment vs creating a 4chan comment is completely different:
on reddit, you comment to get agreement/upvote
on 4chan, you comment to get a reply

on reddit, the content you post is branded; there is your username which makes the content feel like an advertisement for that user. It feels like I'm paying a cost when I agree with content on reddit.

on 4chan, the content you post is austere; there is only the content, which makes agreeing with the information feel costless. I am not rewarding the content creator when I agree with him.

it's similar to how it's easier for philosophers/artists to get famous after they die, than when they were alive. I'm not submitting to anyone alive when I appreciate the work of a dead man.

I'm four beers in rn, so take the following with a grain of salt.
A few possibilities:
His country will arrest him pretty much instantly and imprison him in a government facility to do tests on him. No matter how liberal a country claims to be, they will not give up the opportunity to monopolize something like that, lest other countries beat them to the punch.
And remember, he's just the Principle Observer, he doesn't have any special powers that can resist arrest. His only power is just observing lol.
Then, religious people and physicists all over the world will claim he is the messiah and must be released.
A few radicals will try to kill him, and obviously fail since it's physically impossible to end his consciousness.
Whether he's released or not is irrelevant since no government can last longer than an entity like the Principle Observer. Eventually, the institution will just die out or make a mistake and he'll be free. It's just a waiting game.
Moreover, there will be many "non-believers" but they won't dare to do anything because you really don't want to antagonize an immortal, even if he's bed ridden. Even an invalid can kill you eventually with just some emails if you wait long enough.
The end stage seems obvious though: society will eventually get used to his existence and he'll get too narcissistic until he's almost like an Alex Jones type character, but homeless and drunk all the time. People will just be walking in the city streets and just avoiding him and his rants as if it's an everyday occurrence.

for you to understand something, you must become it to a certain extent.
