Prior to science, (romantic) love had acted as an eternal muse for poets, composers, writers, and anything of that kind. It was seen as a mysterious universal force that binds us together.
We know largely understand it's existence: an evolutionary cocktail to essentially force you to court a person of the opposite sex to procreate, or else face the consequences of loneliness and regret (a less desirable cocktail).
It unweaved a rainbow in that sense. Stripped it down to what it is. And suddenly I look at it with disdain, more so than other areas of life, because clearly all of our behaviors/emotions can be reduced to something similar. But love feels particularity deceptive.
When I'm infatuated, the feeling is so powerful, it goes against itself because it highlights just how irrational it is. I have no reason to be constantly thinking of you. Yes you're pretty, and yes you watch anime, yes you like science and math, but if you weren't that pretty, or better yet if you weren't female, I wouldn't have a second thought about you. This bothers me to no end. Just emphisizes how superficial it is.
With friendships it's less obvious. Yes this can also be reduced to evolution and biology, but it's not so obvious as love when you're living it. They tend to develop gradually, and because we enjoy each other's company for reasons that seem to make sense (hey, I like playing chess, you like playing chess, cool!). Infatuation hits hard and fast, seemingly out of nowhere.
Even though I do desire a relationship (in particular with the girl I described above), everything about love and courtship makes.me feel inauthentic and internal cringe. So, I'm condemned to the aforementioned longing cocktail.
Does scientific/materialistic reductionism have any similar effects on your lives?
