Tell me, if magnetism is just an encapsulation of special relativity applied to electrically charged particles, why is this "search for a magnetic monopole" a thing that exists?

OP, we don't know, that's what makes it such an interesting question. The whole textbook "lock-and-key" mechanism has some failings in explaining everything, and there is some evidence to show that odour perception correlates better with bond vibrations (think IR spectroscopy) than molecule shape.

Also,

So /sci/, I'm seriously considering taking a CS degree. I enjoy math, like to program and enjoy reading books about programming generally. Why is it you hate CS /sci/?

It's lower energy. Why? It just is. We've observed it to be that way. You could probably back it up with some quantum bullshit, but the easiest way is to observe it and see that it fills before the 3d, so just remember it.

What >>7653871 is getting at is that chemistry is a very empirical science, there's a lot of things out there that we know for sure happen but we can't quite explain why, so you just have to remember that it does

Glycolaldehyde is only barely a sugar, it's fucking HO-CH2-CH=O. You're making it sound like we found fucking glucose (and upon a quick search I find that this is because IFLS had a click bait article with the exact same bullshit)

I agree with the premise of the thread, but please leave /sci/

GMOs are fine.
Nuclear is the most sustainable energy source, especially for the price, and the cleanliness of the waste products.
Space programs are pretty important, and identification of near earth objects will both keep humanity safe and provide extra resources to exploit.
Massed vaccination programs are important to the health of a society.
We need to reduce carbon emissions, and the easiest way to do that is by cutting coal power and bunker fuel powered ocean liners.

Research into solar, wind and tidal power generation is good, but currently not viable enough to outperform the advantages of nuclear.

What other scientific truths can we put in this thread to raise the level of discussion with the public and engage them with science?

If a person is highly intelligent, can he do anything he wants in terms of a career/legacy if he has enough ambition and will?
