Using C++ is an interesting approach. A spreadsheet can also be used.

The key to the solution is the formula for the sum of <span class="math">n
integers: <span class="math">\frac{n(n+1)}{2}
.
That's Rocky's cut; Mugsy's cut is simply <span class="math">n
, or the number of iterations.
Summing both cuts = the total loot amount.

<span class="math">\frac{n(n+1)}{2} + n = \$
<span class="math">\frac{n^2}{2} + \frac{n}{2} +n - \$ = 0
<span class="math">n^2 + 3n -2\$ = 0
Using the quadratic formula <span class="math">\frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac}}{2a}
to solve for <span class="math">n
:

<span class="math">\frac{-3 \pm \sqrt{9 + 8\$}}{2} = n
<span class="math">\frac{-3 + \sqrt{9+8*20300}}{2} = n
<span class="math">\frac{-3 + \sqrt{16409}}{2} = n
<span class="math">\frac{-3 + 403}{2} = 200 = n
>mfw I'm being run by possibly the most advanced, complex and badass machinery the universe has ever known so far, just chillin on top of my shoulders.

Universe appreciation thread. Just post cool shit you love about science, bad ass pictures or shit you just think is badass to know.
