Splendid choice. However, to get the interesting jobs you need a PhD. Some fields such as solid state physics have plenty of opportunities both in academia, national laboratories and industry so you have a good exit option. That is important since it means your professor cannot treat you life a serf the way professors of theoretical esoterica can, as their post docs are with limited hope of getting a job,

Do at least one post doc abroad, learn a new language and culture (I did one in Japan). Then consider if you want to do the academic route or industry.
