I don't understand why you guys shit up new threads that actually start out with a legitimate and possibly interesting question. Pic related.

OP there are a few facts that we think are favorable to the idea that other intelligent life exists in the universe. If you want to call that belief then so be it.

First the universe is quite old on an evolutionary time scale which is favorable to life existing. There are a lot--I mean a LOT--of stars out there so there are many possible locations where life might evolve. Now until quite recently we haven't really had a good grasp on how many planets are out there but in the last 10 years or so we have started to acquire a lot of interesting data on that subject. I have heard a lot of varying estimates but it is not unreasonable that 10% of stars have at least one planet that is close to earth size and close to earth temperature so there are an awful lot of candidate planets. We know that the very simple hydrocarbons such as methane are pretty easy to form and so the ingredients of life should be wide spread throughout the universe.

Now there are certainly a lot of unknowns too, such as how difficult it is to form more complex molecules, how likely those are to form self-replicating entities, how likely those entities are to evolve into something intelligent, how frequent planet-killing asteroids are in the universe, etc.

I post this on /pol/
they ignored it and the thread was just

>implying that this wouldn't be happening even if we didn't exist
>implying extinction was invented by humanity
>blaming humans for all the world's ills instead of joining the scientific elite in figuring out how to make the world a better place

Frequent extinctions happened long before we existed, and will continue to happen until life itself is extinct. Goddamnit, OP. Pic related.

No, it's an upper-level biopsych class. I didn't want to embarrass her by laughing or correcting her in the middle of class.
