I don't know, but it definitely applies to me. My last semester of college, I dropped two classes I needed for my second major (math) because a girl I liked started sitting next to me and flirting with me. I graduated with just a minor in math because a girl I liked also liked me.

You have to understand, that these variables depend on one another. At least, the "attractive one." I am pretty sure a woman who say, is an athiest, a dog-person, and athletic, will seem far more "attractive" to you than someone who is seen as "smoking" yet is a chubby cat-lover/fundamental Christian.

Global warming and religious belief are correlated, if she is an intelligent Atheist I am pretty sure she is a fan of peer-reviewed papers and understand global warming.

Also, you don't live in a vacuum and resort to randomly selecting human females from the United States. You have the internet, friends, and other methods of meeting and filtering the population before you meet.

If anything, use your erudition and try using your network of friends and family. 50 people looking are more effective (in most cases) than 1 person looking. And who knows, you might be surprised. In my experience, it is the woman who is NOT your type which can entrance you the most.

Also enjoy the random .gif

Math question!

I missed the first part of pre-calc today and I need a little help with one problem. Hopefully one of you fine gents can lend me a hand.

(-2+√(-8)) + (5-√(-50))

the answer is:

3x^2-2x+5

I just don't know how they got there. Imaginary numbers may be involved.

Help would be much appreciated.
I'm gonna go check out kahn academy while I wait.

When a child is born it has no knowledge of anything. In fact it reacts only to instinct. So lets say we toss a baby on an island with a couple other babies with no contact from any modern society or anything. When these babies grow, in theory won't they be simple neanderthals?

I know this is a cliche question, and as a fellow /sci/borg myself I'm embarrassed to ask (it's a dumb question), and I'm too lazy to read long wikipedia articles. So someone answer me this:

How do magnets work? Aren't magnetic fields just electrons, which are all negatively charged? So how would they be attracted to other negatively charged particles?

Also, how is the north and south pole related to magnetism?
