I don't remember his exact argument but it was something to do with Starship being too large and that a smaller lander would be able to do more trips with the same amount of propellent, plus he just really liked the design. As Dynetics found out it's not that easy in rocketry and achieving a good mass fraction with smaller spacecraft is difficult. It's mostly just that inefficiency is not something to focus on, both the lander and the payloads would require mass autism and the end cost is far greater than the extra propellent.
