The robot seemed to freeze for a second and said:
“I remember you. You are a Lady of the Commonality! The saviours of Mankind, Humanity's most respected! Those who took off to the stars! Have you come back now?”
“We... Were am I? I don't remember taking off.”
“But its been thousands of years. You must have. The mission was to either go back to Earth when things got better or go to space. Did you find anything for Man?”
“We didn't take off. We didn't come back. I was put in jelly and woke up here. Spaceplane? We didn't have spaceplanes on the ship.”
The robot didn't reply.
“Where is Jan?” Eloise asked.
“Who is Jan?”
“The computer. The computer we left behind.”
“I remember computers. They were here a long time ago, but none was called Jan.”
Eloise looked at the old, battered robot and said:
“Who are you?”
“I don't know. I know I was programmed as a house pet and slave, but after the cities of Old Earth fell I was alone for a while, until they found me. All I remember is how to perform surgery and for the last few thousands of years I have been here, from village to village, helping out. We waited for you, for the Commonality.”
“Thousands?”
“We were waiting for you, that's why. But I'm old now, and I can't move, so I have to stay on this village helping only these people.”
“How long has it been?”
