Now look at this cultured dish of bacteria, see how they appear immortal at first glance but on closer inspection they seem to preform similarly to us living on Earth....

Now back to the computer screen as we look into the atomic world, look at how the predicted shapes of the orbits and orbitals rotate around a central atomic mass....

Now you are sitting on a telescope on the outer milky-way look at how all the planets orbit around a mass at the center of the universe...

Now your in a plane looking our your window seat, see how all the lights look like a bunch of beautiful neural interconnections

As you look down on Earth you can't help but feel that humanity is just a fungus on the Earth

Your now /v/ideogaming and zoom in to see the smallest known thing, you find the pixal is the smallest thing you can see.

Now your under Titan's electron microscope and your wondering why we can also seem so similar but so different from a computer simulation

I'm genuinely sorry to bother you guys with such petty stuff, but this is pissing me off.

So I've calculated the standard error (-0.065) and the relative error (0.619) for a calculation of morality of a substance. I now have to calculate the concentration (c=n/v) but include the standard and relative error in the calculation. How do i do that? just add them? Thank you to all those who respond.

What is consciousness?
Does it even exist?
How can you prove other beings are conscience?
How can you prove that you yourself are not infact just a simulated AI that thinks your conscience?

not trying to get all philosophical but is there any science to these questions? or are they still a mystery to us? Thoughts?

Something I've always wondered about these types of pictures: do they correct for the light delay? in other words, do they plot the positions of all these galaxies and clusters according to where they think they are in real time? or is it just based off whatever light we receive?

Is it bad for a scientist if he doesn't know where France is? I don't know where Germany is either, but I don't care since I'm a physicist and knowing where those countries are has never been a heavy baggage to bear.

Which is generally a better course? Bachelor of applied science or a bachelor of science? Which is likely to pay better?

So I was reading The Order of the Universe by Stephen Hawking and another author, and it said something that came as quite of a shocker to me:

The Christian worldview (we're talking fundamentalist new-earth christian here) is not any more "real" than the scientific world view.
There are more experiments (compared to none in Christianity) that the scientific world view predicts. But that doesn't make it any more reliable.

What say you /sci/?

I've heard of people narrowing their waists to a staggering size. Can I do the same with my hips (greater trochanters), if I strap a tight belt around myself every day for a few hours? Or can such behaviour only result in chronic pains?

Heat capacity: How much energy it takes to heat this object up 1°C.

Specific heat capacity: How much energy it takes to heat 1g of this matter up 1°C

Does the difference lie in that heat capacity is bound to this specific object? I can only calculate how much energy it takes to heat this SPECIFIC object, this specific amount of matter of that object, up 1°C? And specific heat capacity works for every amount of the object, as it is energy in 1g up 1°C?

Why is it advised by all doctors to keep your urine clear for optimal water consumption if the very fact that the body has to get rid of so much water is there?

To add to this post, maybe life and the universe is just an infinite repeating fractal, with scales that mimic each other, like this picture.

Placebo effect.

They are known to increase or decrease whatever the doctors tell the patients it's supposed to do.

What if most pills are simply placebos? The patients are told this is an experimental drug on, say, depression management - and it becomes a placebo for the patients under supervision?

Is there some procedure done when testing drugs to exclude the placebo effect?

I'm torn between two options, /sci/.

Should I study politics and become a politician and help guide our species towards a better functioning society, or should I study science and become a scientist and help further our knowledge? By a better functioning society I mean trying my best to lessen the activities that contribute nothing to our universal progress.
