~~~~ BREAKING NEWS ~~~~~~~
http://www.nasa.gov/nh/new-horizons-responds-spacecraft-anomaly
>The New Horizons spacecraft experienced an anomaly the afternoon of July 4 that led to a loss of communication with Earth.
>Due to the 9-hour, round trip communication delay that results from operating a spacecraft almost 3 billion miles (4.9 billion kilometers) from Earth, full recovery is expected to take from one to several days; New Horizons will be temporarily unable to collect science data during that time.
>Status updates will be issued as new information is available.
I don't know quite how to explain this in medical terms, but I always assumed the "red branches" of my eye were directly on my eye, but as I looked in a mirror today from different angles, by turning my head, I could make one branch pass over another. I don't think this is how things are supposed to work, and I want to know if I have cataracts or this is all perfectly normal.
How difficult would it be to re-write Star Wars so that it is scientifically accurate?
My thinking is that the first thing to go would be getting rid of artificial gravity and inefficient laser guns would have to be replaced with modern artillery. The Death Star would just be a giant nuke container.
What would it look like to see a society that is electronically as advanced as ours, but in terms of non-electronic mechanical ingenuity, they are intellectually bankrupt?
Basically the exact opposite of steam-punk if there is a word for that.
Okay /sci/, I'm planning on doing a physics degree. What are the pros and cons for each of these majors (streams)
- Mathematical Physics
- Materials Science
- Environemental Physics
- Astrophysics
I'm keen mostly for the maths stream, but I'd like to hear your views
>No. That's why the concept in itself is bullshit.
Is this bullshit bro-science or is there something to it?
Your logic is as follows.
>Some stupid people kill, but HAL is not stupid so HAL will not kill.
which follows the same exact pattern of reasoning as this.
>Some guys like vaginas, but girls are not guys, so girls will not like vaginas.
It sounds true enough, but I don't actually think I've disproved the existence of lesbians because /lgbt/ still exists.
Also
>Why would HAL want to kill you?
Because it was either given confusing orders that led it to think it needed to kill me.
It was given EXPLICIT orders from corporations/government to kill me.
It became sentient and realized humanity was a threat its continued existence.
