hey there

I've been looking at one of our number theory problems and have no idea how to even start it. It's asking to show that if a prime divides either a or b, but not both, then log(a)/log(b) is irrational. We haven't even talked about logs once yet so it must be something simple, but I can't figure it out. Does anyone have an idea of how to begin the proof?

Hey /sci/. Maths question. Been struggling with it, hope you can help me out!
Let m and n be coprime where <span class="math"> m,n \in \mathds{Z}
<span class="math"> (m) , (n)
are the principle ideals generated by m and n respectively.
Prove that the intersection of these two ideals <span class="math"> (m) \cap (n)
is the principle <span class="math"> (mn)
Is it possible/sensible to study homological algebra without having a detailed knowledge of algebraic topology - starting with abstract definitions and axioms and going from there?
I've already done some work on simplicial (co)homology and thought perhaps studying homology in two settings at once might reinforce what I'm learning.

I'm entering the first year of my undergrad after the summer, so it'll be about 3 years before I'll be taught any algebraic topology and I know remembering how to use everything I've taught myself could be tricky. Though I'm interested in homological algebra, I don't want it to consume so much of my time that I can't refresh my analysis or general topology or what-have-you.

If I say the following:

1000*(1+x) = 250;

x=-.75 -> a 75% loss.

If I say

-1000*(1+x)=-250;

x=-.75 -> a 75 loss?

What do I say when values are negative. Would it actually be a 75% gain?

How do *you* define intelligence, /sci/?
Who do you think is better - Somebody that can understand abstract concepts easily and on the fly, or somebody who knows a lot and can refer to this information from memory?
Which category do you fit in?

Jacob Barnett or Chris Langan?

I need help with a problem I encountered on a aptitude test today. I want to know if I answered it correctly and I want to know if there is an easy way to calculate it in my head. It goes something like this:

>Man A arrives on the scene of a crime
>Witnesses say the suspect left 10 minutes ago for a destination 30km away.
>The suspect is traveling at 60km/h
>How fast must Man A travel to reach the destination at the same time as the suspect?

My way of thinking was, this. 60km/h = 1km / minute. So the suspect is going to arrive in 20 minutes time because he's already gone 10km. So that means that Man A must travel the entire 30km in 20 minutes.

30km / 20 minutes ... I converted that into an hourly figure by multiplying the 20 by 3, then the 30km/h by 3 and arrived at 90km/h. Am I correct?

Is there an easy way to do this? What if it wasn't an easy number like 60km/h?

So I'm a little bit depressed about my EE degree.

I'll be graduating this year and I feel like a lot of things that I learned are pretty much shit tier compared to say 10 years ago. The majority of our projects allowed us to use Arduinos and other prepackaged components. I really didn't even need to investigate a lot of things because it's all so spoonfed for us. I'm at a top 15 university as well. Also I'll be graduating with 1 internship and a 4.0 gpa.

For example, I have really no idea how serial data is transmitted. I just know that bytes are sent and received. The specifics of this process is completely foreign to me.

Am I fucked?

I don't think I have true intelligence, all I seem to have is like a parrot intelligence or something. I can figure out mathematic problems relatively easy and I can memorise methods and facts and apply them to answer a question or do something but I can't answer simple question such as
'Whats the purpose of a government' or 'why are human rights important' I feel these questions cannot be answered, because they mean nothing to begin with.

How do I fix myself?
Is this thing that can fix itself?
Could this be autism?

Could someone possibly explain to me what it means by "Rated Voltage" of an Inductino motor? I understand that this is related to the line-line voltages, but isn't the dependent on the way I actually connect my motor? For example, if I connect it in a Y, then I would see Vlin/sqrt(3) across one winding of my motor. If I connect it in a delta, I would see the entire vline across one winding.

Does this matter? I'm somewhat confused.

Thankks

I need your help from you electric/computer engineers out there. I need to find the average power in one period for the signal:

x(t) = 3 + sin6t - 2cos6t + pi*sin9t - cos12t.

And I also need to find the percentage of the average power within the frequency range [-7, 7].

Supposedly, the answers are 16.92 and 68%, but I don't know the step involved in order to get to that answer. My texts are being very vague. Please help?

Hey guise

I want to learn how to fly a spaceship without actually being in one (as that's probably going to be hard to arrange). I'm working on my knowledge of orbital mechanics at the moment, but is there any field I can study to learn what the controls of a spacecraft are and what they mean?

Energy is what is needed to make things happen, right?

So, if ghosts cannot harness energy, since they cannot eat/drink anything for chemical energy, they can't just plug themselves into an electrical outlet... Unless there is another way of them harnessing energy, shouldn't they just be running on what energy was left following death, or that which could have been obtained during the death?

Theoretically, they cannot exert force without energy, and therefore they wouldn't be able to move things, or even move themselves! Unless the laws of physics do not completely apply to ghosts as counter forces do not apply?
What are your thoughts?
