Yeah. Space is a 3D shadow, being cast on the universe. Wherever matter doesn't reach, there is an empty shadow. Of course there are still things happening in that shadow, just like there are still things in a dark room. Gravity waves interacting across vast distances, light traveling through it in all directions. It just happens to be missing energy in the form of matter, like how an empty room is missing energy in the form of light. If you look at the image you posted, all those galaxies are radiating photons in every direction. Every inch of it is filled with light. You just don't see it until it reaches matter. But then you also don't see what's in the room without light. Both of them are full of energy, you're just not necessarily seeing it

I bet the lazy ones make up the hivemind and control all the others with magnetic waves and shiet. They don't work, because they can't concentrate on two things at once.

you've obviously never been through a quarter at a university. you'd have to be some kind of naturally gifted genius in order to master all of the material your professors give you, on top of having any kind of life outside of school (exercise, social interaction, fun, etc.)

because I was an EMT in high school and realized I hate dealing with sick people and I Don't like having the legal liability of caring for them.

Of course I realize that the scope of care an EMT delivers is nothing compared to the care a doctor tells a nurse to give, same goes for the legal responsibility. I don't need all that over my head every day, and I certainly don't want to be working in a hospital every day.

ultimately, what good is extra money if you despise every second of earning it?

OK, so finals weeks are fast approaching, I've noticed about once a month or so there will be a study thread.Couple questions:
Are study threads considered homework threads?
If not, are they still shit posting?
Also, how's your final exam schedule looking?

Hey /sci/
I was wondering if there's a non-arbitrary definition for what science really is.
We all agree that physics is an "exact science" and we have the Humanities that aren't "exact" but the term exact seems quite arbitrary.
I'm not sure about this but thought it could make a nice discussion.

I've been thinking and would like some intelligent theories as to how eveolution allowed us to develop free wills that allow us to ignore and sometimes even contradict our other evolutionary necessities. ie. a celibate monk, fasting, denying ourselves sleep, etc...

Just a quick opinion on time travel.

My theory is that if someone found a way to travel to the past and actually went through with it, they would destroy the future/present they came from. Assuming they don't absolutely fuck the past up, a similar future would probably come. However, by destroying the future, they are destroying the event of them going back in time in the first place, creating a total cluster-fuck.

Even if you told your past self to return to past just like you did, it would still be a different you returning to the past because you destroyed the future. Essentially, by going back in time, you are creating two version of yourself with absolutely no place for the second version to go. Going to future is completely possible because you'll just destroy when returning to the present.

TLDR: Let's never discover time-travel!

There are also people who are looking down when focusing.

Like said before, facial expression's purpose is to tell people what's in your mind at the moment.

So basically when you frown or looking up-corner it means "I'm thinking".
But why that facial combination ? I can't answer you, it's would be like explaining why =) is happiness and =( sadness.

First what you do is you look at a textbook and remember what a Sigma means... then you plug in numbers for n=3 to n=6 and add....

Hey guys, trying to do some statistical mechanics over here... My prof has asked me to find the surface area of constant energy in the 6N-dimensional phase space for the standard hamiltonian of N classical simple harmonic oscillators. (Ill try to write it out in latex below, but Ive never written in latex before so forgive me if I fuck it up)

<span class="math"> H = \sum_{i=1}^{3N} \left \frac{p_i^2}{2m} + \frac{mw^2}{2}q_i^2 \right
He gives a hint that by change of coordinates, I can deform the surface into a (hyper)sphere... so if I take

<span class="math">q_i^2 = \frac{1}{w^2m^2}r_i^2
I get a sphere with radius 2mE (since H = E), but doesn't this change of coordinates affect the surface area? Shouldn't 'w' play a factor somewhere?

If anyone is able to help, thanks a bunch, and again sorry if this latex shit turns out horribly deformed (I am literally about to break my latex-virginity when I hit submit)

Furthermore, I think this other gentlemen is contending that the Scientific Method should include some allowance for the imperfection of Man; one greater then the current standards, which are (apparently in his opinion,) inadequate. In other words a theory designed for use by human beings is inherently imperfect if it doesn't sufficiently account for the nature of human beings.

For example, pure communism as an economic model. You can say it's a perfect model, and the problem is with "the people" (or the scientists, or whom-ever) but the "theory" is sound. To which one might contend that since the whole POINT of the fucking theory is to be used and applied by people, if it doesn't account for people then it is, indeed, inherently flawed and could stand some tweaking.

You also need a lot of fuel to mine low yield deposits in Canada/Alaska/Bering/etc.
You need a lot of fuel to build solar panels.
I could go on.

This is massive sci-fi but imagine those spaceships already running on thorium reactors, and they'd mine their thorium from below them as they'd park the asteroid in orbit.
We ARE talking [at worst] 300 years into future though. So I doubt it'll be undoable by then if we keep our tempo up, somehow.

The human brain is a (very) complex input/output mechanism.

I'd love to know why this produces qualia, aka an internal subjective experience.
The redness of red, the smell of chocolate, orgasm, all of these things are just nerve
signals being processed by the brain.

The fact that these nerve signals add up to sensations experienced by my mind is a property of matter (carbon, iron, oxygen) I find fascinating.

I ask not whether a machine may have qualia, but rather how complex the machine must be before qualia is obtained, or if things like philosophical zombies could exist. Personally, I hope p-zombies are impossible.

Hey /Sci/, whats up? Anyways long story short I started to try my hand at investing. I made some cash, and now the IRS is looking to get their fair share. Alas, I need to submit my current portfolio. Everything is right except for one thing; I forgot to write down my cash balances for everyone of my purchase/sales. Because the software I am using does not record my cash balance over time I need to accurately find my cash balances in the past by only using math. I keep getting the wrong numbers and was hoping you guys could help.

This has been bothering me for a while.

What if you take a black hole and put it in/near another black hole, would they cancel each outher out? singularity? or maybe destroy the universe?
